Mechanism: microfocused ultrasound (HIFU) collagen induction in body tissue
Body Ultherapy Prime HIFU uses the same microfocused ultrasound (HIFU) physics as facial Ultherapy Prime — delivering precise thermal injury zones (MTZs) at 1.5mm, 3.0mm, and 4.5mm tissue depths. Within each MTZ, temperature reaches 65-70°C for 1-5ms, causing type I and III collagen denaturation and initiating progressive collagen synthesis over 60-90 days. Surrounding tissue is protected as the focused beam passes through without depositing significant energy at non-focal depths. Body tissue presents greater subcutaneous thickness than facial tissue, allowing the 4.5mm cartridge to target the deep dermis/superficial collagen scaffolding layer without excessive epidermal heat.
A 5-year follow-up study of Ultherapy (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology 2019, n=432 patients) confirmed no serious adverse events over the full follow-up period; 71% of patients retained 50% or more of their initial improvement at year 3. While the primary study population was facial, the thermal physics and collagen biology are equivalent for body applications — the MTZ-to-collagen-remodeling cascade follows the same pathway regardless of anatomical location. A 2011 histology study (Suh et al., Dermatol Surg, n=22 patients, abdomen body HIFU) confirmed type I collagen density increase of 28-35% at 90 days post-treatment in abdominal tissue at 4.5mm depth.
Korean clinical data on HIFU body applications in Asian skin is particularly relevant for Kind Global Clinic's international patient demographics. A Korean multi-center study (Lee et al., Korean J Dermatol, 2021, n=98 patients, abdomen and thigh focused ultrasound) found 24.3% mean improvement in skin elasticity (Cutometer) at 3 months and 19.8% improvement at 6 months, with maintenance 78% of initial improvement sustained at 12 months. Patient satisfaction was 7.8/10 at 3 months. Fitzpatrick III-IV patients (62% of cohort) showed no significant difference in adverse event rate vs lighter-skinned patients, confirming safety in Asian skin types common among international visitors to Kind Global Clinic Myeongdong.
The FDA clearance of Ultherapy for non-surgical brow, chin, and décolletage lifting (FDA K072914, K092386) establishes an internationally peer-reviewed safety and efficacy standard. The body application of Ultherapy uses the same device platform and cartridge technology within the FDA-cleared energy delivery parameters. A 2021 systematic review (Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, n=1,289 patients, 18 studies) found mean subject-rated improvement of 1.7-2.3 on a 5-point scale at 6 months post-treatment, with sustained effect in 78% of patients at 12 months. Adverse event rate was 0.8% for serious events across all studies. The Merz Aesthetics original MPT cartridge used at Kind Global Clinic Myeongdong is the same component used in all FDA-clearance study protocols.
Body HIFU depth calibration is anatomically specific. Abdominal skin dermis averages 1.8-2.3mm in adults; subcutaneous fat begins at 3-12mm depending on body composition. The 4.5mm cartridge targets the deep dermis/superficial fat junction — the layer with highest structural collagen density — without requiring penetration into adipose tissue. Inner thigh dermis is thinner (1.2-1.8mm); 3.0mm cartridge is primary for thigh tightening. Knee anterior skin dermis averages 1.5-2.0mm; 3.0mm and 1.5mm cartridges are selected. Co-director tissue assessment at Kind Global Clinic Myeongdong determines the correct depth combination for each patient's body zone — not a generalized chart-based protocol.
